The project seeks to contribute to household food security and the incomesw of 1000 people in farming households by supporting the production of groundnut for an assured market.
The project is taking place in East Hararghe area of Ethiopia, and specifically amongst small-holder producers of groundnut in Babile, Gursum, Fedis, Midegu, Melkabelo and Bedeno.
East Hararghe is the groundnut belt of Ethiopia. This project is seeking specifically to research and pilot a contract farming model to increase the incomes of farmers who are producing groundnuts for sale. The undertaking is in collaboration with local farmer co-operatives, with buyers Valid International, and has received technical support from University College, Cork.
The pilot is being assessed for the potential of smallholder farmers and cooperative members to supply high quality groundnut commercially to Valid International, an agency who produce high protein bars for treatment of severe acute malnutrition.
