Ihite Walde has been trading in the market in Butajera for the past decade – buying small quantities of fruit and vegetables, and selling them to local shoppers.
‘When I joined a local Self Help Africa SACCO I began to save, and after a while took out a small loan, so that I could increase the amount of produce that I had’, she says.
‘When I used to work her I used to only have potatoes, or perhaps a few carrots to sell. But now I have a range of different fruit and vegetables, and my turn-over has increased significantly’, she says.
A mother of six children, Ihite Walde says that she is the sole earner in her family, as her husband has been sick for the past number of years, and is unable to work.
'It is difficult for us because my husband is very sick, but at least we have an income from the work that I do, and it is particularly important that I have been able to grow this business', she says. |
